The policy needs to be clarified by the District to make it clear that kids can bike with their parents to school. Please attend the School Board meeting on June 2nd or write the Board.
Policy #4233 reads:
" 3) A pupil under the age of ten shall not ride a bicycle to school.
a)The Principal may make exception upon written request of a parent.
b)The Principal may forbid bicycles on school grounds. "At the end of this e-mail are statements from some schools demonstrating how schools present this policy to parents.
June 2, 7:15 PM, at 545 W. Dayton St. there is a District School Board meeting where the public can ask the Board to clarify the policy to allow kids and their parent to bike to school together. I'm asking anyone that can make it, to come and speak or register your support for a change in the District policy. The policy should be it less hostile toward biking families.
A child's younger years are an excellent time for families to work together to instill positive attitudes and habits towards transportation and physical activity. Under adult supervision a child can learn safe bicycling habits. School District policy should encourage, rather than discourage, families to work on these life skills together.
If you can't make the Board meeting please write to the Board and ask that the policy be clarified. An example letter and the Board's addresses are at <http://www.lic.wisc.edu/bike.htm>
I am suggesting a simple change in the policy so that it is less hostile to kids biking to school and does not prevent young kids from biking with their parents to school. The wording I am suggesting is:
"3) A pupil under the age of ten shall not ride a bicycle to school UNSUPERVISED.
a)The Principal MAY ALLOW A PUPIL UNDER THE AGE OF TEN TO RIDE TO SCHOOL UNSUPERVISED upon written request of a parent.
b)The Principal may, LIMIT bicycles TO A RESTRICTED AREA ON school grounds."
Please come to the June 2nd meeting and write a letter to the Board and cc: it to the Mayor's office. Board president's and Mayor's office addresses below. More addresses and info at: <http://www.lic.wisc.edu/bike.htm>
