As someone who has acquired asthma in the past decade, and who must travel on (the sidewalks of) roads with heavy traffic, here's a big helper:

<http://www.icanbreathe.com/favorite.htm>

It is *very* comfortable (and I wear glasses), lightweight, and slips into a pocket when not in use. It contains a replaceable charcoal filter that you simply velcro in. It's allowed me to sit around campfires, enter stores where incense is burning, and go outside on "high ozone" days in Madison. It's easy to breathe through, as well--I never get that gaspy feeling.

My advice is that, regardless of having asthma or not, try to avoid going
close to, or riding on roads having heavy motor vehicle traffic. If you
have no choice but to take them (or cross them), avoid breathing deep
while your on them. Slow down if you have to to do that.
