I was there for the presentation part of the meeting, and the question/comment session.

The Mayor's Presentation on the Plan:

I think he did a great job framing the issue as one of "a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a great street".

He showed slides of several great streets around the world, then went into the goals of the initial project and outlined where the current plans are not meeting those goals. There was a lot more detail in the plan that I picked up from the few newspaper articles I had read up to that point.

One of the things I was impressed with was that the parking would not be to the right of the bike lanes (from the bicyclist's perspective), but in cut-ins along the right edge (local traffic side) of the right median. [While I think this would be awesome, Jeanne Hoffman cautioned me that there will be a lot of compromise in the design at the next Council Meeting]

Also, the proposed change covered a relatively short distance from the capitol (10 blocks?), the rest of East wash being left to its current design. Several people in the crowd suggested this be extended to First Street. The Mayor suggested that the initial construction phase be moved into the currently scheduled year-long construction break (in 2006?), but that the entire plan would still be completed by its original finish date.

Most of the people attending seemed very supportive of the plan. There was a huge round of applause after one person thanked Dave for bringing this issue into the spotlight. There were a few people who were very concerned about traffic issues, and a few more that were uneasy with the additional expenses this may bring.

I'll leave it to someone who stayed for the rest to fill in the holes...
