Just like Quebec, eh? Right on red in general is a reasonable thing, and it's silly
to have someone's motor vehicle idling/emitting foul gases while waiting for a light
when there isn't another person or vehicle in sight for a block or more. And
repealing right on red would be an annoyance for us on bicycles, too--we already have
to wait too long at intersections where the sensors don't recognise our presence;
let's not also be stuck not even able to make legal right (or left on intersecting one
way streets) turns at those intersections.
Isn't there some kind of cliche about babies and bathwater?
There are, however, some places where right on red leads to conflicts with vehicle
operators who don't yield. Let's deal with those locations (and times of day) where
it's likely to be a problem. There are already places with no right on red, either
always or for specified time periods. Expand that to include other areas (or times)
where (when) it makes sense.
It's true that to some extent it all comes down to driver behaviour and enforcement,
but a lot of people who won't pay attention to people crossing the street do observe
the law if it's on a sign in front of their faces.
Now go have a beer,
