My disdain for mopeds lies in the fact that they emit the same amount of
pollutants as 50-100 automobiles. It's not what I want to breathe as I'm
pedaling to work, shop or play.

It might be that I just don't encounter them as much as people on
campus do, but I'm not quite sure what the big deal is. No, they're
not bicycles and for many trips it seems (to us) to be silly that the
moped drivers need an engine to get them around on the shorter trips,
but they aren't cars either. Many of us may not like these things
taking up scarce bike parking, but perhaps the problem isn't so much
the mopeds but the inadequate commitment to providing secure bike
parking--and that includes even when there are racks that are
unsuitable for the purpose. The person who designed and installed
those ridiculous things between the Memorial Union parking lot and the
entrance should be forced to commute by bike and be forced to park in
the stupid things. :-p

Agreed. Assuming that someone isn't speeding across a vast length of
sidewalk terrorising everyone in his/her way, I don't see that it's
such a big deal. I could be convinced otherwise with concrete examples
of why it's wrong.
