Just to be clear - and stay on message - the report from STPP and Smart Growth America, "Measuring the Health Effects of Sprawl", concentrated on the effects of community design, and spent very little time theorizing why people in sprawling areas don't bike/walk more. I don't think they said anything except that distances are quite far.
My guess is that the Washnington Post article quoted added information from another study or report to try to explain the lack of walking/biking in sprawling areas. The report is quite good. It is based on two medical studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Although the results are no surprise to most people on this list, it is important that we have good research to back up our arguments. If anyone would like to see the full report or look into more about the health effects of sprawl, go here: www.smartgrowthamerica.org At 11:56 AM 09/01/2003 -0500, Kathryn Kingsbury wrote: >Anyway, I was also disappointed by the comment at the end of the Sprawl >Study article that said the rash of driving in the U.S. is understandable >because death rates for cyclists and ped are so much higher here than in >Europe. _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.danenet.org/mailman/listinfo/bikies
