"All it takes for the forces of evil to survive is that the people who
are good stay silent."
-- Edmund Burke

--------------------------------------------------------------

On October 24th, people all over the
country will challenge the epidemic of overwork,
over-stress and time famine. They will choose to
be less overscheduled, if even for a day (baby
steps!), in order to engage more deeply with
family, community, nature, and civic life.

Speaking of engaging in civic life, we cant
overemphasize the urgency to do so today
(http://www.newdream.org/sbs/). While its likely
that youve been hearing of the ongoing energy
bill deliberations, its now time to raise
our voices louder than ever. The House and Senate
areat this very momenton their way toward
passing an energy bill that will make our nation
even more reliant on fossil fuels and exacerbate
both environmental destruction and national
insecurity. And as if thats not bad enough, it
will add $19 billion to our record budget deficit.

In a time of record deficits, Congress shouldnt
even consider taking on further debt unless
theyre sure it will mean a safer, more secure
planet for our children. Unfortunately, the
current energy bill fails on all counts and will
leave our children holding three bags: 1) the bag
of a monster national debt to pay off through
higher taxes and reduced services; 2) the bag of
environmental and health problems brought on by
fossil fuel-driven pollution and climate change;
and 3) the bag of an insecure world where the 4%
of the population living in the United States
consumes at least 25% of the oil and other fossil
fuel.

But it doesnt have to be that way! Were the most
powerful and innovative nation on earth and, if
anyone can set and achieve the goal of a secure
energy future, we can! But to do so, we need
Congress to scrap this energy bill and immediately
set to work on a national energy plan based on
efficiency, conservation and renewable energy. We
need our leaders to set real goals, real
benchmarks, real dates for reaching energy
sustainability.

Please call the Senate switchboard at 202-224-3121
and ask to be connected with your Senators
office. Urge your Senator to do everything in his
or her power to stop this wrongheaded energy bill,
even if it means using the filibuster. Challenge
your Senator to lead the way on a forward-thinking
national energy plan.

To find your Senators names and the direct
numbers for their offices, or if youd rather send
an email, click on
http://www.newdream.org/ndan/sbs.html

Then hang up the phone and shut off your computer.
Go for a walk in the woods, have dinner with your
family, or plug into one of the many Time Day
events across the country
(http://www.timeday.org). Not only will you be
taking back your time in a meaningful way, youll
have done your civic duty for the benefit of
people around the world today and for generations
to come.

Best wishes,

Kathryn, Sean and all your friends at the Center
