Well, I guess I won't then. You're right, we already knew most of this, but what IS new is the figure he assigns to the transformation of dead stuff to petroleum. It's also nice to see stuff like this pop up in the mainstream press where people who fell asleep in science class might get a chance to read it...


Yes, we long ago knew:

x pounds of dead stuff = 1 gallon of gas (6 pounds), where x = lots and lots.

But now we know that:

98 tons of dead stuff = 1 gallon of gas.

Therefore, filling up my Subaru just once requires 2,156,000 pounds of dead stuff. Miles per gallon? Heh! I get 8.8 inches per pound of dead stuff! On my bike, I can probably get about 30 miles out of a quarter-pounder (which I don't eat, but that's another topic).

Does it matter that 98 tons of dead stuff = 1 gallon of gas? Probably not. Just food (no pun intended) for thought.
