Woodland is an obvious main north-south link. Many children from Waunakee use Westport's recreational fields, and it would be great to provide them with a safe means to access them.
...as well as the safety of "the children", yes, "the children!"
Neither option provides such safety. The first option is too narrow to be classed as a bicycle facility (5 feet is the *minimum* width for a bike lane) and the second is patently unsafe--*especially* for "the children"--as proven time and again, in study after study, as summarized in Mike Rewey's recent post.
If you really want to provide safety for "the children," I suggest you contract with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to provide BikeEd courses. They are very good at training "children," yes, "the children" of all ages (they need it up there in Waunakee since I see kids up there riding against traffic all the time) in safe operation of bicycles in traffic. Then, if violence by motorists persists, perhaps remedial Drivers Ed should be implemented as part of the correctional process for all violators of traffic laws in that area.
Better yet, contract with an organization that employes people knowledgeable in best-practices for bicycle facilities. You could probably start with the Bike Fed there too. I'd be happy to provide you with other names of people in the area that are qualified in planning bicycle facilities.
In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if we could get away from the shrieks about "the children" (a cry that is obviously meant to stifle any opposition to bad planning) and instead aim for state-of-the-art best practices in safe transportation facilities planning and education for all people of *all* ages.
In looking at the 1990 Dane County Open Space plan I noticed that this area is to remain agricultural. I wondered what happened with that good plan?
