I don't think its sinful (although it is illegal in a few places). But in some situations the sidewalk is a practical way to go. However, as noted by others, it requires that you slow down, yield to pedestrians, and be especially cautious at the many intersections. In other words, you have to go a lot slower to travel with the same degree of safety as you have riding on the street.
