Biking on the sidewalk is pretty normal out here, as many do not want to brave Cottage Grove Road.  There is a long stretch between 51 and Culver's that is only interrupted by Cold Storage, which doesn't have a huge amount of traffic.  I've seen bikes/peds/joggers/dog walkers all managing to get along on a fairly narrow sidewalk.  Nothing like banding together when trying to commute or get decent exercise in adverse situations.  Now that I have a kid carrier attached to the Bike E, I can't bring myself to bike on that road anymore.  I started to, choked, and headed for the sidealk.  My husband feels the same way.  If we ever got hit, I would be crucified as some kind of psycho nut job for taking a kid on that road. Until conditions change, I see a lot of sidewalk in our future.  Dragging the carrier over one of those potholes or the train tracks and ejecting the carrier and kid into traffic is not on my "to do" list.

I don't think its sinful (although it is illegal in a few places). But in some situations the sidewalk is a practical way to go.

However, as noted by others, it requires that you slow down, yield to pedestrians, and be especially cautious at the many intersections. In other words, you have to go a lot slower to travel with the same degree of safety as you have riding on the street. That is why I generally prefer to ride in the street.
