I don't expect unanimous opinion on what's needed for the Glenway St./Multi-use
Path intersection, but thought I'd share some details on a meeting I attended
last week.

The City of Madison held a planning meeting on traffic calming structures to
reduce the speed of motor vehicle traffic on Glenway St. between Monroe Street
and Mineral Point Road. The meeting was held Tuesday, June 14. I attended
mainly to give my opinion on the path/street intersection.

I advocated for a 4-way stop at the intersection. The City's engineer replied
that Madison drivers do not pay attention to stop signs and that makes them a
poor choice for slowing traffic on Glenway St.. I asked for his statistics
since I told him I didn't think Madison car drivers regularly blew through stop
signs without slowing way down or coming to a complete stop. I told him I
thought a four-way stop would reduce the potential for collisions between
bicyclists using the path and automobiles on Glenway St.. It would also be less
costly than a concrete structure.

The next stage is that the immediate neighborhood blocks get to vote on what
type of structures should be designed for the project. I asked if they
intended to survey bicycle path users, but was told they did not plan to do
that. I said they should do that for this project. I don't believe they will
though.

I thought the person who was running the meeting (Dave McCormick) was very
biased in favor of building cement structures. The street is quite narrow at
the location of the Muli-use Path, so I doubt cement traffic calming structures
can be constructed at that location without having to also widen Glenway Street
at its intersection with the Path.
