< More off-topic content on hybrid vehicles, I'm afraid. From today's New York Times. Only two of the ten models were previously announced … Also in today's Times-- but not included below-- is a longish article on Southern California's historic struggle against air pollution.... Toyota is developing 10 new hybrid electric models for sale worldwide by early in the next decade, the company's top North American executive said today.

Pollution, especially from motor vehicles, is always "on topic" for bicyclists - we have to ride through it!

What concerns me most about the these kind of articles is that they feed complacency. Ten models of hybrid cars being available in ten years is not going to help us now. We ought not wait another decade to start massively conserving on energy. We have to start reducing fuel burning now - in today's motor vehicles and power plants.

The only effective way to achieve that is for everyone to drive less, fly less and use less energy, overall. Even if we own a more fuel efficient vehicle now, we can still cut our fuel use in half by driving half as much, or less. There is no encouragement by anyone to do that.

The energy bill is getting signed today. It's a massive boon to the fossil fuel and nuclear energy corporations. It will doom the population on the planet by the end of the century. It contains token gestures for improving efficiency and renewable energy development, not much more.

Our political leaders lack the motivation and the courage necessary to do what's necessary to really increase conservation: reject their "business as usual" mentality. Things are no longer "business as usual" as far as the environment is concerned.

You don't have to be a scientist to see we are in a great deal of trouble. Read what Astronaut Commander Eileen Collins had to say last week when viewing Earth and its atmosphere from space last week:
