There has been a bit of discussion about what crash types are most
significant for bicyclists. Here is some data from a study done for the
feds based on data from the early 1990's

Overtaking crashes (where a motorist is overtaking a bicyclist)
accounted for only 8.6% of all crashes, but 29.4% of fatal and serious
injury crashes. These crashes typically occur at night on rural 2-lane
roads.

Motorist failure to yield situations (motorist turning left or right or
merging across the bicyclists path of travel, or a motorist driveout
from a stop sign, right turn on red, parking space, or driveway)
accounted for 33.9% of all crashes and 25.6% of fatal and serious injury
crashes. These crashes typically occur during the day on 4-lane urban
streets. A very high percentage of the motorist driveout situations
involve wrong way bicyclists, 67.3%, with many of those being bicyclists
riding on sidewalks.

Unfortunately, this study is not available on the internet. I do have
a copy in my office if anyone wants to delve into it.
