Police drop idea of crosswalk sting

LISA SCHUETZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Madison Police officials have dropped a plan that would have had
plainclothes officers walking Downtown crosswalks in an effort catch
motorists who don't stop for them as required by law.
But they'll still be handing out tickets as part of an initiative to
enforce crosswalk laws, Capt. Cameron McLay said.
Starting today, plainclothes officers will be monitoring Downtown
intersections and ticketing motorists who don't brake when pedestrians -
non-police pedestrians - are lawfully using a crosswalk, McLay said.
Pedestrians should also take care, he warned.
Walkers who step into traffic in such a way that forces motorists to
stop suddenly, even at crosswalks, will be ticketed.
The original plan was to have plainclothes officers legally use
crosswalks, then ticket anyone violating the state statute requiring
motorists to yield.
But after that plan was announced last month, people complained, saying
the police were setting up motorists for failure, McLay said.
