I discussed Ms. Kacynski's death with police officers who were involved with the investigation. They said she had a very signfiicant amount of alcohol in her system when she was killed. According to the lead investigator, they were waiting results from the Crime Lab before they could close the case, which they expected would take a while to get. I'll make a note to follow up in a month or so.
I also talked with the police chief of Cottage Grove, the lead agency in the investigation, who said they too were waiting for results from the Crime Lab before they could take any more action. I did get a copy of the MV4000, the standard crash reporting form. According to the report both the bike and motor vehicle were moved by the time the officer got to the scene so they couldn't tell initially where she was riding. Officers can check off some 60 contributing factors that lead to the crash. The officer who did the report thought the driver's inattentiveness was a factor in the crash. Whether that is enough to lead to charges or whether that will hold up after a more thorough investigation remains to be seen.
