Subject:        FW: FBI Message and Holiday eMail Scams

This message is to notify of a recent scam and a reminder of what to do with unsolicited eMails.

Attempts at Internet and eMail fraud usually increase during the Holiday season.   Many of these are variations of  "phishing" attempts, designed to get you to click on a link.  Clicking on those links may unleash viruses or other attacks against your computer and the DNR network.

These unsolicited messages may look very credible.  They try to exploit your trusting nature or curiosity.  Many of these frauds claim that you have won a prize, they have received your order, or that your credit card or bank account needs update or confirmation. The only way to deal with them is to delete without clicking on ANY of the links.  The "unsubscribe" or "Don't bother me anymore" link is also a bad choice.  Just DELETE them.

Lastly, a scam message is currently circulating that claims to come from the FBI, as described in this news article from CNN.

November 22, CNN Federal Bureau of Investigation warns of email scam. The Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued an alert Monday, November 21, about a scam involving
unsolicited emails, purportedly sent by the FBI, that tell computer users that their Internet
surfing is being monitored by the agency. The users are told they have visited illegal Websites
and are instructed to open an attachment to answer questions. The FBI did not send these
emails and does not send any other unsolicited emails to the public. The FBI is investigating
the scam.
