Summary: Individuals and organizations concerned about the obstructionist role
the U.S. government has been playing in blocking efforts to mitigate future
global warming will be gathering in Madison on December 3rd for a Critical Mass
ride, beginning at 11:00 AM at the UW campus Library Mall, and ending at 1:00
PM at the downtown MATC campus.

The ride is scheduled to coincide with the marching of hundreds of thousands of
people on December 3rd in Montreal, where representatives from nations around
the would will be meeting at an international United Nations climate
conference. The march and other worldwide demonstrations are intended "to take
place in a festive, family and peaceful spirit" and send a clear message to
decision-makers for the "USA to Join the World" by Ratifying the Kyoto Protocol
and taking other actions to reduce its daily and annual greenhouse gas
emissions.

World leaders from over 150 countries will be meeting at a major United Nations
Climate Conference in Montreal, Canada on November 28 through December 9, 2005
to address the growing world problem of global warming and what should be done
about it after 2011, the year the U.N.'s 1997 Kyoto Protocol expires. The
decisions made at this conference are likely to have a major impact on our
future and the future of our children.

Activists around the world have been mobilizing for December 3rd, which is
being entitled the "International Day of Action to Stop Global Warming". There
is a rapidly growing understanding that this is a critical issue of overarching
importance to human kind and the planet.

Yet the United States, having only 5% of the world's population but emitting
25% of the world's anthropogenic (human related) greenhouse gas emissions,
continues to play an obstructionist role against mitigation of the growing
crisis through, by its own lack of action to bring about reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions from the U.S., and by not only its failure to ratify
the Kyoto Protocol Agreement, but also its working behind the scenes in
attempting to block progress on implementation of the agreement.

Events are being organized in 32 countries to demonstrate concern over the lack
of governmental action to confront the growing threat of global warming. A
major demonstration will take place in Montreal, Canada, where many thousands
of people are expected to march through the streets of the city. Similarly,
local actions will be taking place throughout the U.S., in at least 25 states
and 30 municipalities.

Individuals and organizations from the Madison area will be gathering in
Madison on December 3rd for a Critical Mass bicycle ride, beginning at 11:00 AM
at the UW campus Library Mall and ending at 1:00 PM at the downtown MATC
campus.

Also taking place on December 3rd in Madison (from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM)
"Community Action on Latin America" is partnering with MATC's "Global Horizons"
program to put on CALA's Ninth Annual Fair Trade Holiday Fair! Dozens of
vendors, information booths, workshops, bake sale fundraiser, music, and other
educational fun. This is a chance to celebrate the holidays through fair trade
solidarity. The fair will take place at MATC's Downtown Education Center at 211
North Carroll Street, between Dayton and Johnson streets. The Festival will
fill the second floor conference area in the center of the building. A copy of
the "People's Ratification of the Kyoto Global Warming Treaty" will also be
made available for individuals who wish to sign the document in lieu of the
U.S. Congress' and President's failure to ratify the world's treaty to stop
global warming.

The Downtown MATC campus is a only a few blocks walk from the Library Mall, or
one can also take the No. 8 Madison Metro bus or any bus that stops on the
Capitol Square, which is about two blocks south of the MATC campus.

At the same time as the leaders of over 150 countries are meeting at the United
Nations Climate Conference in Montreal, Quebec to address reducing annual
greenhouse gas emissions from all the world's countries, starting 2012 - 2011
is the year the U.N.'s 1997 Kyoto Protocol expires - you have the opportunity
to listen to Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope debate Jerry Taylor,
Director of Natural Resources Studies at the Washington D.C. based Cato
Institute in Madison beginning at 7:00 PM on November 28th.

The Bradshaw-Knight Foundation is sponsoring the debate "Global Warming, Energy
Policy and the Role of Government", which will be held at the Wisconsin
Historical Society, 816 State St., (across from the Memorial Union).

This should be a good program for hearing the very latest arguments behind the
task of determining the appropriate U.S. response to the emerging global
warming crisis.
