Thanks for arranging and publicising this. I may suggest to the other
members of my EnAct team that we consider attending as a substitute for
our upcoming Monday meeting that would otherwise occupy this time slot.

I do have some question, however, about the focus of the group. The
"other Mike" in the group will likely dismiss this commentary with a big
long and exaggerated "W" word ;-), but I submit that this is more than a
matter of "mere" semantics.

Language makes a difference, and I think the naming of the group and
description of the mission is terribly short-sighted and self-defeating.
I consider myself a transit advocate, and only in small part a BUS
advocate. Although what we have now in Madison as a poor substitute for
an actual rapid transit system happens to be a dieselbus-only system, we
shouldn't limit our medium and long term aspirations to the continuation
of a fundamentally inadequate system that lacks other more effective
modes of transit. While buses need to be a component of the system, the
backbone of the system needs to be cleaner, faster, and more efficient
than mere dieselbuses. Yes, that's right, Madison has been talking
about rail rapid transit for years (decades) but continues to do
nothing. Without frequent, timely, and affordable service on
intelligently designed routes, transit is going to continue to go nowhere.

Since the message refers to this meeting as "the ground floor," why not
set your sights higher right now by renaming it the Madison Area Transit
Advocates, Dane County Transit Advocates, or something like that?

Now go have a beer,
