Conklin: Lawmaking biker veers left

Rep. Steve Wieckert, a Republican from Appleton, is
taking his prep for Bike to Work Week seriously -- at
no small personal cost.
He got an early start Friday on a 30-year-old Schwinn
10-speed, biking from Madison to an appointment in
Ripon, although he somehow ended up missing his wife
at the planned meeting time there. Then Sunday he
decided to do the full route from his home in Appleton
to Madison. He made it . . . but it took 15 hours
(thanks to fierce winds), and along the route he lost
his wallet.
Wieckert blames Democratic Rep. Spencer Black, who
gave him his Wisconsin biking map.
"Spencer kept telling me to take lefts when I wanted
to take rights," jokes Wieckert. "The gol-darn
liberal."
Unfazed by loss of wife and wallet (both have since
been located), Wieckert plans to continue his biking
ways: "The countryside was beautiful. It was
inspirational."
