The detour route is a suggestion, not a requirement. People can use
whatever alternative rout they choose, as long as they stay away from
the 1300 block of E Wilson Street. If some people want to use
Williamson Street, that is their choice.

No one who is following the Isthmus Path has to cross Williamson Street
more than once, whether they are westbound or eastbound. Before the
detour the crossing of Williamson Street was at Riverside. Following
the signed detour route, the crossing is at Baldwin.

We prefer bicyclists stay off the sidewalks (a) because sidewalks are
not really safe places for bicyclists; (b) there are too many bicyclists
in this area, especially with bicyclists traveling in both directions,
to accommodate two way bicycle traffic on the sidewalk; and (c ) in this
area there are too many pedestrians on the sidewalks for it to be safe
for the pedestrians to put this many bicyclists on the sidewalk. In
fact, I have gotten more complaints from pedestrians about bicyclists on
the sidewalks than I have from bicyclists about the construction and
detour.

For the westbound detour, at least, I think bike traffic should be
routed up (or at least given the option) Williamson, rather than forcing
bikes to cross Wmson three times. Also, is the bike path really being
closed? If you were going down the bike path to Dickinson, won't you be
able to get through (riding the Dick sidewalk for a partial block)?
Also, the BIKE PATH CLOSED signs are a real obstacle on the bike path,
especially at night when they're barely visible.

The 1300 block of E Wilson Street is out of commission for sewer
replacement. A bicycle detour is being signed that will get people
around this construction. Heading inbound the detour will bring
bicyclists along the following route

At the traffic signal at the bike path/Riverside/Winnebago/Williamson
   turn left onto Riverside
turn right onto the Jenifer St ped/bike bridge over the Yahara River
continue towards downtown on Jenifer St
   turn right onto Baldwin St
cross Williamson St and continue on Baldwin
turn left onto Wilson St and you are back on the regular route

The detour works the same in reverse, heading outbound - - take Baldwin
across Williamson to Jenifer, over the ped/bike bridge and up Riverside
back to the path.

This might not be completely signed until Monday, but construction
staging started yesterday and they might be working on Saturday.

Please help spread the word and reduce the conflicts and ill will with
people who live on the 1300 block of Wilson Street (who are unhappy with
bicyclists on the sidewalks conflicting with their kids playing on the
sidewalks) and with construction workers.

Thanks,

Arthur
