Last night's hearing soliciting ideas for capital projects (things that need to be built, like connections, paths, over/underpasses) that will enhance the pedestrian/bicycle environment was interesting. Normally, the room is packed, but last night was sort of quiet. However, if you still want to submit suggested projects, you can email them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ask that your email be distributed to the entire PBMVC and included in the public hearing record.

The big topic at the hearing was the possibility of building the Perry Street overpass of the Beltline. 6-8 people from Oregon and Fitchburg came to ask that it be built, and the PBMVC received a number of emails from Fitchburg residents with the same request.

An overpass at Perry Street would link the area of the city north and south of the Beltline between Fish Hatchery and Park St/Hwy 14. This would provide an excellent commuting route for people from Madison going to jobs at the office park in Fitchburg, or people from Fitchburg coming to jobs in Madison. It would also allow workers in Brahm's Addition, just north of the Beltline to access entry-level jobs in the light-industrial area along Stewart Street, south of the Beltline. The overpass was first proposed by the WiscDOT because people were cutting holes in the fence to get across the Beltline on foot!

Obviously, this overpass would also serve recreational bicyclists very well, since it would allow us to access Seyne Rd without going far east or west. Fish Hatchery Rd is just not an acceptable crossing, especially during peak travel times.

If you would like to see a segment from the news last night, although not entirely accurate, since the overpass isn't even on the city's plans right now, check out Channel 15's web page:
