Dear Robbie,

Your description was correct and was even generous as to a safe distance
for the average country county road which does not have a shoulder or
generous width. One third the space is more than I ride. Of course the
idea is safety and not impeding traffic. My experience has been that teens
and the elderly bull their way along, not wanting to cross the centerline,
but rather crowding bicycles.

A recent study has shown that cars come closer to bicycle riders in bicycle
clothes and helmets than those without helmets. The researcher found that
motorists feel that such equipped riders are like the automatic dogs at a
dog track--mechanically riding the edge and that they don't have to give
space.

Eric
