Another variable of interest in this study is where it was done - - England. My understanding is that the use of helmets is still not common in England. The author may even have a bias against wearing helmets and is attempting to use his study to support his position.
Here is another quote from the article ""We know helmets are useful in low-speed falls, and so definitely good for children, but whether they offer any real protection to somebody struck by a car is very controversial." Few people in the US would argue that is controversial whether or not helmets offer bicyclists any real protection to someone struck by a car. In fact the author of the article was struck twice while wearing a helmet and is still alive.
