If there's one thing that I've learned from traveling over the
westbound bike lane on University Ave., it's that Madison city
engineers and street maintenance crews are nothing if not stubborn.

How many years have they been annually filling the crevasses on
University Ave. with heaping gobs of asphalt that turn chasms into
curbs despite numerous protests from cyclists? There are times when I
wonder if the cure is worse than the disease.

The rubbery tar they use to fill the smaller cracks does tend to grab
and pull at bicycle wheels, especially in the summer. Anyone want to
lay odds on how many years we'll have to suffer with it before the word
not only gets out, but gets through, to the folks with big trucks and
orange vests?
