How can new-urbanism survive if we can't get a sore throat looked at if you don't own a car? At least with my health provider that has been the experience.

About 2 years ago one of the city papers did an article called "Corridor of Care" about all the medical facilities along Park Street and University Ave. Having recently had to drive out to the edge of town to one of the two immediate care facilities that my provider runs (UW-Health/Physicians Plus), I was pretty burned up by the assertion that the downtown had great medical care. Sure if you're dying, but forget it if you have a cold or flu or strep or pneumonia. Either you drag yourself on to your bike and slog out to the edge of town to one of the "immediate" or "walk-in" care facilities or you stay home and tough it out. Yes it is possible to get to these clinics without a car but you might as well plan to take the whole day and spend a lot of time standing at a bus stop or peddling until you puke. Now I try not to be a slacker when it comes to biking, I bike to work every day. But when you're about to throw up on your handle bars, one starts to feel a little put out after the second or third mile.

So, how about folks send me the address (latitude/longitude would be even better) of the immediate care or walk-in facilities for your health provider and I'll make a table and a map so that we can see which providers are really interested in their urban clientele. I suggest that we post on the Bicycle Community Page a table showing how far from downtown each provider has walk-in care facilities. Then people can at least know what they are getting when they sign up for a particular provider. Ultimately it would be nice to map and score all clinics as to their accessibility for downtown residents.

I'll start.
UW-Health:
     Immediate Care facilities:
East: 4122 East Towne Blvd.; distance from Capitol, 6 miles
West: 7102 Mineral Point; distance from Capitol, 5 miles

p.s. thanks to tim wong for bringing this issue up.
