Indeed...someone is smoking something.
Just a followup...yesterday my partner, who lives in Northern Indiana, was
biking along a two lane road with a paved shoulder. She was on the shoulder
and a truck swerved on to the shoulder near her and laid on the horn. After
they passed they leaned out the back window of the truck and yelled at her.
She was riding a late 1990s mountain bike in street clothes, and while she
doesn't look like a homeless person, she also doesn't look like she just
stepped out of the Tour de France either.
Someone mentioned to me last night that maybe the common theme is bicyclists
being on the road...that motorists don't seem to harass or assault bicyclists
who ride on the sidewalk or on paths. Whether that is because they don't have
the same violent reaction to bicyclists who are not in the road...or whether
they just don't have access, is debatable.
Not that I'm suggesting people ride on the sidewalk...which has its own set of
conflicts with pedestrians and potential crashes with inattentive motorists at
intersections. Plus it is often illegal to ride on the sidewalk, and almost
always less convenient than riding on the road if you are trying to get
somewhere or trying to ride fast.

P.S. I would hope that we could all agree not to use each other in illustrative
examples on this listserv. If I weren't a very "out" person, I might not have
appreciated having my name in the same sentence as "Gay Pride Parade"...whether
I was gay or not. Actually, I don't appreciate being used in illustrative
examples regardless of the context. If we want to be respected by other users
of the road, perhaps we should start by respecting each other's opinions and
privacy in this forum.
