Someone mentioned to me last night that maybe the common theme is bicyclists being on the road...that motorists don't seem to harass or assault bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk or on paths. Whether that is because they don't have the same violent reaction to bicyclists who are not in the road...or whether they just don't have access, is debatable.

I know some view it as a cop-out, but avoiding the main thoroughfares greatly reduces the frequency of harassment. First, there's the statistical effect of fewer vehicles passing, but I think there's more: Drivers on thoroughfares seem to particularly resent anyone who might impede their progress (often at 15-20 mph above the speed limit). I can't prove it, but I'm convinced that some of the same drivers who give you plenty of room on a quiet side street would take your elbow off on Monroe St.
