Or far better than getting a proprietary Mac system, install Linux on a partition on your current machine (or just wipe M$Windoze off completely ;-) ). With an open source system, you'll have all kinds of free stuff. In the interim, you might want to check FreeAVG anti-virus, one of the most highly-regarded freely available anti-virus programs. http://free.grisoft.com/ Grisoft FreeAVG is free, but not open source. If you'd like to check out a collection of popular open source software available for M$Windoze, see: http://theopencd.org/ and http://portableapps.com/ As for making the break from M$Windoze to Linux, keep in mind that "it's not just for geeks anymore." Take a look at Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ It's actually EASIER and faster to install than any recent version of M$Windoze, and you have a lot of useful applications all ready to go, unlike a M$Windoze install, after which you have to (perhaps) buy and install more software. If you're hesitant about partitioning your current machine and don't want to go completely off M$Windoze, go over to UW-SWAP and pick up an inexpensive computer... you know, reuse/reCYCLE (okay, now this is Bike relevant, ummm, sort of ;-) )... and set up a separate Linux-only computer to try out. In addition to some in the $180-$200 range, you can also get a computer for $20-$40 as follows: (just copied from http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/swap/inventory.html ) Omnitech Pentium III 800 MHz - 1.0 GHz 256 - 512 MB RAM, 15-40 GB HD, 10/100 NIC, USB. This is more than adequate to perform well with Ubuntu (which requires 256MB RAM or more) Indeed, I can say from personal experience that this configuration is more than adequate...because (and I'm not at work today) I am using one of these at this very moment. (I got it long before the price went down to $20-$40... more like $100 a few years ago.) -- Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino "Are Canadians just Americans who carry hockey sticks instead of guns, or is there more to it than that?" --"This Canadian Existence" Wisconsin Public Radio ( ) ASCII ribbon campaign X against HTML e-mail: / \ Friends don't send friends HTML-bloated messages!
