Dear Group, When biking is linked to walking as a "silent, ecological, healthful--alternative" to motoring, wouldn't the first step be with walking? And have I missed something where no new subdivisions in areas where I live have sidewalks! Are sidewalks mandatory in the greater Madison area? What about "retrofitting" the older burbs without sidewalks of any kind? Suburbs in "movies" don't have sidewalks either--so it must be Nationwide? Not only are sidewalks for small children, but for everybody who can walk. Does walking have to take place only in malls and large public buildings? If we required sidewalks for the first step, this friendlier "newtown" we long for would not need so many millions.
