In response to Tim and Steve's conversation regarding who to report bike
trail/route maintenance issues is there a good answer?

I'd also wonder if there is such a place, perhaps Ped/Bike committee and
Platinum Bike for a "top 10" suggestions of needed improvements....I've read
the summary of the Platinum Bike report, need to dive into the rest prior to
the hearings but this group clearly has ideas of need...I'd suggest a few that
perhaps already have been, in no particular order;

  1. A pedestrian walk/don't walk light at the Capitol City trail/crosswalk
crossing on the east side of John Nolan at Rimrock/Hotel entrance.

  2. A convex/ or is it concave? Mirror at the outside of the turn as the
path goes under the northbound lanes of John Nolen on the south side of the
creek, it's a tight blind turn that I've seen a few accidents, including a
helmetless rider hitting the side brick wall with his head.

  3. More mid block bike racks in the downtown..."customer parking" on King,
Hamilton, the Square etc

  4. Fixing the road depressions left from the Bus weight in front of the
Union that will eat a bike wheel if hit wrong...in fact, that whole Bus drop
off thing really needs to be looked at...they park on both sides of the
crosswalk and pedestrians have little view, or view of....

  5. More covered lockable bike parking lockers, perhaps near the clerks in
the garage.

  6. Planning policy requiring employee locker/unisex shower facilities in new
commercial construction of a certain size and above to encourage bike commuting
etc...

  7. Flashing lights to auto traffic near major pedestrian
crossings...southwest trail as an example near tokay/odana/midvale

  8. Marked detours of paths during construction projects...the whole west
campus/highland avenue might have been signed better...I know we figure it out
but not everyone does....also ensuring that street cleaning around projects
happens far more frequently...a lot of construction residue makes for rocky
intersections/turns etc...

  9. Prioritizing repair of bike route street issues...and snow removal.

I know a lot of you have been involved with these kinds of issues so thanks,
but there is always room for improvement.

and my biggest bugaboo....10. Strong campaigns not only to wear helmets when
riding but proper footware! open toe'd sandals that flex are toe amputations
and accidents waiting to happen..."sensible cycling shoes"....

  Ride Safe, Troy Thiel
ps there's another side to the story about Milwaukee and Whitney Gould to
analyze...Job suburbanization drives a lot of these transportation
choices...we're clearly living it here with the proliferation of the ring of
Office Parks...somehow we need to do better retaining or recruiting growth of
the employment world into our portions of the City very well served by transit
and bike options...the Hill site, East Wash Corridor etc...and work to retain
employers who are thinking of moving out if possible.
