I do not condone the behavior of the bicyclist but I can understand it, especially when one reads the news bit above the biker bit. Ped killed/no charges .... hmmm, have I heard this story before? I wonder if anyone has ever done a study where you take all the crashes resulting in death for a given time and area, then you divide them up into ped deaths, bike deaths, car deaths, then take the next step and see how many crashes resulted in citations and how many in convictions. Is there a difference in citation/conviction rates between ped-car, bike-car and car-car? Do the rates change if you account for alcohol in each crash type? Is anyone aware of a study such as this or similar? And if not, I would be interested in doing one, maybe just in Madison, my home town. Any thoughts? Ann M. Freiwald, ASLA
