While we're channeling Donald Rumsfeld (asking our own questions), the next
question is: _Why_ does the board exclude candidates? Well, that hearkens back
to the old riddle about why male dogs, er, do a certain thing; the answer is
"Because they can."

So (apologies to Sec. Rummy) why _can_ they? This, to me, is a more central
question. Whoever of the "Be the Engine" candidates gets elected, seems to me
their _FIRST_ order of business should be to draft a change to the by-laws both
to simplify and to democratize the BOD election process. Something like: "Board
candidacy shall be open to all dues-paid members. Announcement shall be made
with the second-last newsletter before the election, with nominations due, with
accompanying bios, <x days before the election>. Names of all properly-applied
candidates shall appear on the ballot. The BFW shall publish the bios in the
last newsletter before the election." Yada yada ...
