Just sent this to the Madison police via the Web site, but thought this group
would be interested:

The evening of Sept. 22, after the UW-Iowa football game, my wife and I were
walking home along the Southwest Bike Path, along with hundreds of other
people, when we realized there was a car behind us, driving on the path. This
was between Breese Terrace and Commonwealth Avenue, a span of more than half a
mile with no place for the car to turn off. It was about 11 p.m., and very dark
out and extremely dangerous. I called 911 and described the situation, and told
the dispatcher where the car was located at the moment (heading southwest on
the path by Harrison Street), but the dispatcher said she had not heard of the
Southwest Bike Path and needed a street address to send an officer! After some
back and forth I suggested they send someone to the intersection of Leonard and
Commonwealth and look around for the bike path, then head northeast on the path
to try to intercept the driver. I don't know whether any officer responded, or
if so, what happened --
though I'd be interested to know. My suggestion is that you train dispatchers
and upgrade maps if necessary to show the many bike paths in the city, and not
rely simply on street addresses for locations.
