Just a reminder that the meeting with city staff regarding the
Monroe-Regent-SW Path-etc intersection will be tonight. West High
cafeteria - 7:00 PM.
There was quite a bit of discussion on this list last week about this
intersection. I hope many people show up to speak directly to city
staff, ask questions, and voice your opinion. I have heard that there
has actually been discussion about a separate pedestrian-bicycle phase
for path users, but Traffic Engineering is against it. If you really
want this option, lots of people have to show up and say so.
Also, there may be an option to allow path users a green at the same
time as the left turn phases, but this would mean NOT removing the left
turn lane on Little St - that is the weird left turn from eastbound
Regent to eastbound Monroe. Neighbors and many pedestrians and
bicyclists said a couple years ago that they wanted the right turn "slip
lane" (west bound Monroe to Regent) to remain, but wanted the left turn
option to go. Unless others speak up, that seems to be the perception
under which city staff is operating.
Remember that the reason the intersection is so screwed up is because it
was designed to make as many movements as possible possible while a
train was blocking the intersection. That same route is now the path, so
maybe we just need to use the same logic. Or maybe not.
