When the press release about this came out a while back I didn't think much about it since I'd known it was in the works for some time...but when it arrived on my doorstep yesterday I was reminded how important this is. The Thunderhead Alliance,a the national coalition of state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations working in unison to break down the barriers to safe bicycling and walking in North American communities, has released its long awaited Benchmarking Report. Thunderhead has 128 member organizations in 49 states and two Canadian provinces...and membership includes BTA of Dane County and BFW. Planet Bike is a major supporter of theirs. The report is...outstanding...and provides information that can well be used in discussions with elected officials, bicycle plans, and proposals and grants. I can't even express how great it is. They have compiled information for all 50 states and for the 50 most populous cities in America (Milwaukee is featured, Madison is not). They went to great lengths to make sure that the data was collected properly and is scientifically valid....where that falls short, they explain in great detail. The correlation graphs in the report are shocking and fantastic. Everything that we have always said is true about bicycilng is laid out graphically. Kudos to Thunderhead.
