I meant to post a few things the other day:
1. The BFW DOES have a blog, though no one has posted to it for a year. It is
at http://bicyclefederationwisconsin.blogspot.com/ and it used to be linked
from the BFW home page under "news" but the link was removed several months ago.
2. Santa Rampage, as already mentioned, is not a BFW event. To hold BFW
responsible for the promotion, or lack there of, is not fair. And besides, to
me it always seemed like it was well promoted and well attended. For that
matter, Santa Rampage is a variation on a Critical Mass ride, which BFW has
never actively promoted (please, please do not take this as an opening to
debate Critical Mass).
3. I have a lot of issues right now with BFW communication...but none of it
is about events. I'm worried about mission/vision, election process, personnel
policy, lobbying policy, general operations transparency, how BFW responds to
individual requests for information, and how BFW deals with the media. The one
communication issue that I think BFW is doing well at the moment is promoting
events...its own and other organizations. BFW has long published a "Ride
Guide" that lists as many events as they can find information for. It is
on-line and in published form. http://www.bfw.org/events/calendar.php They also
try to get the word out on the various listservs about other things as they
arise. What more they can do than that, I don't know.

Hello everyone!
Wow, what a hot topic communication turned into on the listserve yesterday!
Id like to take a stab at the topic from the BFW perspective. First off all
of the staff is acutely aware that our means to communicate arent sufficient
right now. To our members we are able to send quarterly newsletters and monthly
e-blasts, but we dont have a good way to disseminate information to our
non-members and rely heavily upon various non-BFW listserves such as this one
to try to get the word out about not only bfw but all area biking events. Truth
be told, there is a lot going on relevant to bicycles and it makes it hard to
post everything we hear about. With that said we would like to figure out a
better way to easily communicate to more people but need help figuring out the
means to do this.
If you are a tech-savvy person or just spend a lot of time on the web and
have ideas of what we can do to make communication better, please help us out!
I will be out of town at a conference through next Wednesday, but after that I
would love to hear from people about their ideas. If there is interest and
people are available Id love to set a time for us to get together and
brainstorm options. So if youve got the time to help us out or have
suggestions, please contact me!
In the meantime, Milwaukee Bike Winter events are posted in the following two
places: www.bikewinter.org and www.myspace.com/mkebikewinter We will continue
posting events we hear about to the listserve a couple weeks in advance of
events as well.
Something else exciting that you all can look forward to seeing sometime this
winter is a new logo for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin! Thats right,
were in the process of having our logo redesigned! Once we have that done we
will begin work on redesigning our website too! So be patient, were aware of
these faults and are trying to address them.
In Cycling,
Shea
