Dar,

Have you looked at the calendaring features on www.madvelocity.com?

Two years ago I inquired about the status BTA site and its outdated content.
Having an extensive technical background and just getting into cycling I was
excited as to see what contributions I could provide to for the Madison cycling
community. I hooked up with Joe King from the Brazen Dropouts yahoo email
list and we talked about my possible participation in moving the BTA site
forward. However, Joe was not willing to make the proposed changes I stated
would be needed to move the site forward. So, with the rejection I took on the
project myself and madvelocity was born this summer.

Madvelocity has all of the features which have been discussed in this thread
and some others as well. Madvelocity offers the Madison community:

Calendaring - Site Calendar, User submitted events, and Personal
calendersCAPTCHA - CAPTCHA for combating SPAM and allowing non site users to
contribute to almost all site features.Comments - All features support user and
anonymous commentsFAQs - Frequently Asked QuestionFile Management - Download
files or submit a file to be hostedForums - Private and Public, Email
subscriptionsIntegrated Maps - Yahoo and Google mapping features for mashing,
and event locationsLinks - User submitted Links and link categories
Media Center - Media center which supports any media type and the streaming of
local and embedded media. Private Messaging - Private messaging between site
membersPolls - Private Messaging - Private messaging between Site membersRSS -
RSS Content Syndication can be setup for any site Topic, Forum, Calendar,
Links, File Management (Downloads), and even Comments.Topic Blogging - Users
and anonymous can contribute to Topic BlogsUser and Group Permissions - User
and Group permissions can be applied
to any site feature, Events, Blog, Forum, Media, Downloads, Links,
Polls, etc.User configurable environment - Users of the site can control what
features to display, email features, private messaging options, etcI am also
working on additional site features such as reoccurring events, event attendees
registration and event reminders for those attending an event.

I guess I am writing this email as I see this thread as somewhat ironic and I
see an opportunity to circumvent a lot of wasted time and resources producing
what has already been done. I know it's not BTA branded but it does seem to
meet your business requirements. So let me know if Madvelocity can be used in
any way to expand the BTA.

See original email thread below.

Joe,

Thanks for the offer and for showing interest in this project. I am
interested in taking the current BCP site well beyond its current capabilities;
however, in order to do so, the website must be running a system which can run
PHP 5. and would need access to a mysql 4.1x database. Additionally I would
need Root access to the web and database systems (if they are on separate
systems). I you could let me know the specifics of the environment in which it
operates, I would be appreciative.

Just to clarify I was not suggesting in any way that the web pages would be
copied to another site just that the idea's, structure, and information could
be
relocated if the current site was unable to provide the necessary
functions.

Non-profit is not an issue.

Mark,

The
offer still stands for you to be the BCP webmaster and I would
encourage you
to consider it as you would be free to implement
whatever you choose.
Provided you have the technical know-how of
course. The only real
restrictions that come with the site is it is
strictly non-profit. No
advertising is allowed.

As you point out much of the information at the
BCP is stale. That
is because the site has gone without a webmaster for over
a
year. All it needs is some one with the interest and the skills to

restore it to glory.

Copying pages from the BCP to another site is
strictly prohitied.

Cheers,

Joe

Matt:
I really like the idea of a calendar. I think this would be really useful to
post all public meetings that might be of interest to bicyclists (all public
meetings probably fall in that category, but we could mostly include those with
semi-obvious ties like Planning Commission, MPO, PBMVC, UDC, Transit/Parking)
along with public input opportunities that spring up irregularly. And, of
course, it could also have fun bike events, classes, races, rides, etc on it as
well. A one-stop shop for all bike goings on in Madison.
