"The Tahoe Hybrid is not merely a Prius that can tow a boat. It is a
5,716-pound supertanker of a vehicle that is still twice the mass
necessary to do the job it's typically assigned to do, that is, move a
person or persons in and out of the suburbs. The Green Car Journal
award seems to enable the continuing American fixation on super-sized
vehicles."
- Dan Neil, a Car reviewer for the LA Times. A fact which makes
this quote quote-worthy

-French president Nicolas Sarkozy announced what he called "the second
French Revolution" to make France a more environmentally run country.
If his words are followed by action, it will include a ban on
constructing new motorways and airport expansions, more railway lines
(both long-distance and local) and stricter carbon emissions on cars.
-After nearly 12 years of conservative rule, Australia just signed in
a new centre-left government, and upon being sworn into office, prime
minister Kevin Rudd's first official act was to sign the Kyoto
protocol. Former Midnight Oils frontman Peter Garret was named
environmental minister, with a second minister being named to deal
exclusively with climate change issues.
-"2 Mile Challenge" takes off. With forty per cent of urban car trips
in the USA two miles or less, the 2-mile challenge has been on a bio
diesel bus tour, complete with interactive exhibits and loan bikes.
Cycling is promoted for shorter trips and practical tools are offered
for people to map their community and to find the best bike commuting
options.

-The European Greenways Association has just recently awarded prizes
to the best greenways in the III European Greenways Awards ceremony.
In the Development and Tourism category, Spain's Plazaola Greenway won
first prize, while in the Mobility category UK's Kirklees Greenway
network came in first.

- British prime minister Gordon Brown is talking about doubling the
number of eco-towns to be built in the UK from five to ten, while
eco-towns are given ever more consideration and developers are showing
interest.

- Several French groups are planning a "celebration" for when oil
prices peak 100 dollars a barrel. It should be a moment to rethink the
way society is based on motorised transport, non-local economy and to
privilege public transport and cycling

- In a neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, the group Sustainable
Ballard has devised a new program that encourages folks to consciously
re-evaluate and reduce their car dependence. The successful "Undriving
Ballard" program was launched at the group's 4th annual Sustainability
Festival on Sep 29-30, 2007, and featured an "Undriver License
Station" and a Fred-Flintstone-style, human-powered "Shufflebus."

- In late November, Sao Paulo Critical Mass participants placed the
first Ghost Bike in a spot that one bicyclist was killed in 2006. He
was one of the 84 victims of motorized traffic last year. With more
than 60 participants, the November Critical Mass ride included Mona
Caron, muralist and illustrator (known for her bicycle mural in San
Francisco). She painted a small mural at Bicyclist's Square.

-BMW, Daimler and Porsche win "Worst EU Lobbying Award" at a ceremony
in Brussels hosted by the award organisers Corporate Europe
Observatory, Friends of the Earth Europe, LobbyControl and SpinWatch.
More than 6600 people across Europe voted in the online poll. The
"win" is a result of a joint lobbying offensive designed to water-down
and delay the mandatory CO2 emission reduction targets proposed by the
Commission

-Stop Coal=Stop global warming. "Architecture 2030" launched the 2030
Challenge, calling for all new buildings and major renovations to
reduce their fossil-fuel emissions and become carbon neutral by 2030.
The group argued in a full-page ad in The New York Times that the only
way to stop global warming is to stop coal.

-London closed down three major streets, including Oxford street, Bond
street and Regent street on a recent weekend, which had the effect of
bringing a million Christmas shoppers, visiting over 600 shops and
spending 100 million pounds.
