Subject: [milbtw] Bicycling and ATV issue to be aware of

Please read the following summary made by the Bicycle Federation of WI. This
probably does not affect everyone on this list, but it is an issue to be aware
of.

As some of you might know, the WATVA (Wisconsin All Terrain Vehicle
Association)
is using Renee Callaway's video and photos of the Hales Corners CX race as
"evidence" that our sport damages public lands and that we are irresponsible
stewards of the properties on which we race. This, of course, is in response to
our stance that ATVs do not belong on bicycle trails (such as the Badger State
Trail), as the damage they
inflict on non-motorized trails renders them unridable to bicyclists.

Furthermore, the ATV lobby has picked up on the article in the Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel that happened to mention "30 packs of Pabst" at the Hales
Corners race, and is attempting to portray us as a bunch of idiots who get
drunk
and rip up public lands on our bicycles.

Renee and the Bike Fed of Wisconsin have already posted rebuttals to their
idiocy, with Renee's response being particularly effective coming from an
actual race director. However, I'd like to remind everyone that we're being
scrutinized by people who are out to put an end to our sport and to deny us
what we love to do.

Some of the more "interesting" quotations from the minds of ATV'ers:

"Thanks for sharing pictures of 50 of the stupidest, vandals in the state of
Wisconsin. Everyone on the race roster as well as the race organizers should be
issued a ticket for destruction of public property."

"How much you want to bet that taxpayers money is going to be used to fix the
damage. The map shows how much of the park they damaged, even across baseball
fields."

Let's use this as a gentle reminder that good stewardship of the public parks
is
a MUST, and that we ALL must lend a hand to repair the slight damage that we
inflict on trails following a race.
