the CARPC meeting last night.

The WSJ seems to frame the issue as:

"Environmentalists encourage walkable, dense development that will
reduce automobile pollution. Developers respond by saying that forcing
certain densities will increase the cost of housing, drive Dane County
workers to live in other counties and lengthen automobile commutes."

Of course, what the developers seem to neglect to mention is that the
higher cost of housing in higher densities is often due to a lack of
supply of high density neighborhoods.  The real demand for higher
density housing is highlighted in a recent report at
http://www.smartgrowthamerica.org/narsgareport2007.html .  Most notably,
80% of Americans prefer redeveloping our older existing  urban and
suburban areas rather than building new housing and commercial
development at the edges of existing suburbs.


Also, developers seem to overlook the fact that when densities are high
enough, savings in transportation costs outweigh the increase in housing
