Accidentally sent this to only Rich. I'm guessing the "tax" argument is that "bikes don't pay for the roads." or "[car] drivers pay for the roads with gas taxes, so they should get all the money and facilities."
These are old, tired arguments and ignore: 1. Most of us also own cars, so pay for gas taxes. Thank goodness access to the roads is no based on how much tax you pay or gas you use. My little gas sipping car should and does get as much access as a big-ass SUV or F150. 2. Most of the roads we ride on are local roads that are almost 100% paid for by local property taxes. I have plenty of arguments against all the rest of the nonsense she is spouting, but I'll save it for the Council floor. Quite honestly, I don't see this facing much of a fight. Fortunately for us, most of the Madison Common Council is smarter than Vikki McKenna. (That's not saying much, since I have my doubts about a few on the Council, but it's not a very high bar.) For those who would like to follow the progress, or comment at any point, it has been referred to the following committees BEFORE it gets to the Ped/Bike/Motor Vehicle Commission, and then the Council. I have noted when the committees next meet so you can see if you can or want to attend any of them. I cannot guarantee the item will be on the agenda on the date I have listed, just that it is the next meeting for that body. Board of Public Works - Feb 6, 4:30 PM Parks Commission - Feb 13, 6:30 Long Range Transportation Planning Commission, Feb 21, 5 PM Transit and Parking - Feb 12, 5 PM Board of Health - Feb 21, 5:30 Public Safety Review Board - Feb 12, 5 PM Plan Commission - Feb 11, 5:30 The week of the meeting you can check where the meeting is being held and the agenda by going to the Weekly Meetings list for the city http://www.cityofmadison.com/cityHall/WeeklySchedule/ Robbie On Jan 31, 2008 12:54 PM, Richard Frueh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Jan 31, 2008 11:55 AM, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > The usual caller whining: > > > > Bicycles downtown don't stop at stop signs... > > Bicyclists should be taxed. > > Bicyclists should be licensed. > > > 1) True, so not a bad comment.
