Excellent posts on Sprawl issues and Red Light Cameras. I agree with the posts here...red light cameras at intersections are great ideas and MORE traffic enforcement for other violations as well...when we did the Safe Routes at Randall back in 04/05...over 80% of Regent vehicular (and down hill East bound cyclists I'll bet...if they weigh as much as I do!) traffic was exceeding the speed limit during "children present" by over 10 mph!!!....speed is exponentially a factor in increasing the severity of an injury and potential death...let's face it..an adult, let alone a child...is no match for a 4,000 pound piece of metal going 20 mph...or 30...or more. The unfortunate fatality at Midvale this past year is just another example. As a vehicle commuter most of the time (please forgive me, I have considered a Rickshaw to show clients but damn this town is Hilly! I could have done it in Evanston) it is clear that the speed scofflaws are ever present....far more so than red light runners. I'm for circulating traffic teams round and round the town to some of the more dangerous (example..near schools) routing's. As to the sprawl..in Matt or Eric or Robbie's notes I did not see mention of employment centers driving the sprawl...a clear indicator/lynch pin in smart planning...I saw it in Chicago...corporate centers move out to the outer burbs...housing gets built out there...the chicken of job location usually drives the egg of housing choice location. When the job centers reactivated the inner city and loop of Chicago...you saw the higher density development of housing and entertainment that is making Chicago truly a city that one could live in without owning a car (don't get me started on the public transit financial mess fiasco's though). What we have to do here is ensure that in our center city potential...perhaps through the downtown Plan or Economic Development plans....that the critical piece of job growth is a large component of what helps infill occur rationally....
