I would be interested in what, if any, follow up the city traffic
engineering staff have with these design considerations. Will insights into
safety for non-motorized vehicles be incorporated into all future, and
retrofitted into existing, Madison roundabouts?

The planned reconstruction of the intersection at Monroe / Regent / Crazy
Legs / Breese / Oakwood on the near west side (right at the base of the
giant UW football phallus) included, as one of the possible options, a
roundabout or traffic circle. I don't know when that discussion and funding
will resume, but if a roundabout becomes a serious contender there, it will
be essential that non-motorized users of the intersection get fair access
and safe accommodation. For purely aesthetic reasons I like the idea of a
European style circular plaza. However, I'd give that up in a heartbeat if
circles are inherently dangerous to bicyclists.
