There will be a bike ride from the Memorial Union to the Alliant Energy Center,
leaving at 11:45 a.m., to join a Clean Wisconsin and Sierra Club protest at the
Alliant Energy Shareholder's Meeting. The calm, friendly, protest starts at
12:15 right outside the Alliant Energy Center. There will be signs and
information for Alliant investors, followed by a Ratepayers Meeting in the Expo
Center to highlight the utility's anachronistic plan to build more coal power
plants, one in Wisconsin and one in Iowa. Why, beside the above-mentioned bike
ride, should bikers care? One reason is that the proposed coal plant for
Cassville, WI (on the Mississippi River) will require the bluff cut and
re-alignment of scenic County Highway VV, part of the Mississippi River Trail.
And don't forget Alliant's move from downtown to the far east sprawl years ago
(while MGE, a local utility moving away from coal, kept it's bike-friendly
headquarters). Lastly, coal trains clog Wisconsin's rail lines and trucks
hauling millions of tons of coal ash are huge users of our state's
transportation system, as we get 70% of our electricity from coal (the highest
percentage for any state that is not a coal-producing state). For more
information go to: www.cleanwisconsin.org or http://4lakes.org/coal.htm
