The City of Madison is rewriting its zoning code, which covers
everything from the number of parking spaces (car, bike, moped, etc.)
required at a building to how many people can live in a particular
type of housing unit. Our current code dates from the 50s and 60s, and
mandates separation of uses: commercial, residential, retail,
industrial, manufacturing, etc. This means that if someone wants to
build a development with retail on street level and residential above,
they have to go through a special process.

One of the first steps in rewriting the code is to hold meetings where
the public can weigh in on what they feel should be changed. Those
meetings are happening tonight (Monday) and Wednesday (May 21.)

Many people on this list have voiced concerns about the current zoning
code not fully providing adequate bicycle parking. For instance,
residential buildings must provide one bike parking space per unit,
but there are no requirements that it be indoors or covered, and there
is no requirement that there be visitor bicycle parking. Our code also
says nothing about moped parking, and increasingly mopeds are taking
up bike parking spots.

Other list participants have opinions on urban form, car parking
requirements, more efficient land use, open space, green building
requirements, or many other topics. All these can be included in the
new zoning code!

Please consider attending one of the meetings.
