Many (most?) people on this list probably spend a great deal of time in downtown Madison. What do you think of it? Here's your chance to speak up about what's good, bad, needs change, or should be retained. (For this project, "downtown" is defined as the area bounded by Park, Regent, Proudfit, and Blair.)
The city is developing a new downtown plan. What should be in it? Full article at link. Schedule of workshops at the end of this message. http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/292832 Please especially note, for people on this list, the "Moving around" session tomorrow at 5 PM. My suggestions will include: 1. Pay-by-the-hour bike lockers, for when you want to be able to stash your shopping/panniers/nice bike while downtown 2. Looking at the bicycle parking needs of downtown residents and workers in older buildings. Much rack space is taken up by long-term parkers, so it isn't available for people in downtown for short periods of time. (Just like we have long-term and short-term car parking.) 3. Prompt removal of bikes that are obviously abandoned. Again, these junked or damaged bikes are taking up space in racks that others could use. 4. Find a place for a Bike Station. Although many people think State St, the logical place would be closer to the GEF buildings, as Bike Stations work best near large employers (or high-capacity transit hubs like train stations.) 5. Consider event bike parking. This is more important for outside the downtown, but perhaps should be considered for large downtown events as well. Here are the schedule and topics for series of meetings on the Downtown plan. All will be held in the Overture Center's Wisconsin Studio, 201 State St. *Tuesday* Visitors and tourists: 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Recreation, culture and entertainment: 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. *Wednesday* Moving around, 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Downtown working and business: 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. *Thursday *Downtown living: 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Sense of place: 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
