It'd also be nice if we had rules about adequate measures being taken
to preserve reasonable bike routes during construction. About 2-3
times a week, I make my way from UW Hospital east through campus.
That first connector between Highland Avenue and WARF was advertised
to UWHC employees as a "pedestrian/bike route". It was reasonable
when it opened last fall, but...
The winter caused the asphalt ramp at the curbs in the middle of this
route to crack and fall apart. Granted, they fixed it within a few
days when I e-mailed someone at UW FPM, but it should've been pretty
obvious to begin with. The route itself is narrow at points (they
tell me it's "up to standards"), and at the end near WARF, there's a
mostly-unavoidable 1-2 inch drop over a curb to get into the parking
lot that gets you to where you cross Walnut Street.
The best part was this last week, where when I came up to the section
in front of WARF, the _entire_ path was blocked with...a bike rack.
This rack had been slowly been creeping over over the weeks, but now
it was completely blocking the path. My only option was to go up on
the steeply banked concrete around it.
Perhaps we should try offering a similar set of interesting options
for motorists in the area and see how long that lasts...*sigh*
Does anyone know when the path from University Bay Drive to the Dairy
Barns will open up?
Peace and Prosperity,
Dipesh
