New bike and pedestrian bridge opens over East Washington
The Capital Times - 6/30/2008 1:07 pm Pedestrians and bicyclists won't have to take their lives in their own hands trying to cross the always busy East Washington Avenue, with the unveiling today of the new bike/pedestrian bridge over the major arterial at Starkweather Creek and Marquette Street. The bridge is included in the $16 million improvement project on the East Washington segment stretching from Third Street to Aberg Avenue. Officials expected on hand for the opening of the bridge Monday included Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi and U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison). Baldwin helped get $1.6 million in federal funds for the bridge and another bridge scheduled to be built at Aberg Ave. The new bridge is part of the Starkweather bike/walk path, connecting the Madison Area Technical College area with the Capital City Trail. The design of the bridge features Prairie-style architectural detail similar to the detail on the East Washington Avenue bridge crossing the Yahara River.
