Thanks for posting that, Doug. It's a good reminder of how fortunate we all are, and how a basic bike can be so important to others.
I once looked into whether there was a way to do such a thing based in Madison. I had been in Miami, and saw barges headed to the Caribbean loaded with bikes (although it's also possible many were stolen, as my local friends theorized.) When I looked into the logistics, people who had been involved in similar programs said that most are based in port cities, because of the cost of overland transport of the bikes. The closest was Chicago, which of course is also a port. Madison would seem the perfect place: tons of bikes abandoned every year, lots of bike knowledge, the largest community of returned Peace Corp volunteers in the country, etc. Maybe that will be my retirement project.
